Image and Echelon will be taken offline at 1:00 AM EST (-0500 GMT) on January 1st, 2009 for a kernel upgrade to 2.6.28.  Downtime duration is expected to last less than 5 minutes.  The latest kernel, 2.6.28, introduces the ext3 filesystem successor, ext4 providing enhanced performance and quicker disk consistency checks.  Converting to ext4 is an irreversible operation once extents are enabled, which mandates some real-world stability testing.  Testing is scheduled to last until January 31st, during which time, provided there are no problems with the new kernel, another outage will be scheduled to begin filesystem upgrades.

The following services will be upgraded on all servers.  Interruptions are expected to last fewer than 2 minutes for each affected service.

  • Dovecot 1.1.7 (IMAP/POP3)
  • MySQL 5.0.75
  • PHP 5.2.8

Three additional upgrades have already been published, but did not warrant a separate entry

  • nano 2.0.9
  • Horde 3.3.2
  • IMP 4.2.3
